Separate reports are also compiled for each state of the union, so the highlighted data here comes from the report specifically on Mississippi. The full state report is 91 pages long and can be viewed on line by doing a Google of “USFW Deer Hunting Analysis.” There are tons of statistics and information in this report. It is a curious read if you are so inclined to be interested in such things.

Mississippi resident and non-resident hunters total around 304,000 participants. Some 66,000 of that number are non-residents. Lest we not forget that those folks spend a lot of dollars while hunting in our state, as well. Now, those numbers are for all hunters, big game, small game and waterfowl hunters alike. In total all hunters in Mississippi spend about $520 million a year on the outdoor sport of hunting. Each hunter on average spends roughly $1694 a year. Non-resident hunters spend another $88 million each year.
Of the 304,000 hunters, 276,000 deer hunt. Some 90-plus percent of all hunters participate in deer hunting. I’d say standing at the sales counter at Van’s in Brandon or Surplus City in Clinton or Hunter’s Hollow in Oxford the day before the gun season opener, that number sounds about right.Deer hunting is not only big business in the Magnolia State, it is an institution that rivals college football.
Deer hunters in Mississippi spend on average $233,621,000 a year on chasing big bucks for the wall and does for the freezer. This is just on deer hunting alone.
